Departamentos Project

Uruguay

Our Goal: $133,000

The Vision

Uruguay is made up of 19 Departamentos (Counties). Many of these Departamentos have an evangelical population of less than 4%. Most Uruguayans do not have access to the gospel through a local church. We want to change this reality by developing and deploying transformational leaders to plant and strengthen churches throughout Uruguay.

The Project

To create content and develop training materials to help accelerate the development and deployment of 500 ministry leaders in Uruguay by 2030.

More Information

  • Uruguay, officially known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a small country located in the southeastern part of South America. With a population of around 3.5 million people, Uruguay is known for being one of the most socially, economically, and politically stable countries in the region. The country is characterized by its beautiful landscapes, including rolling plains, sandy beaches, and picturesque colonial towns.

Uruguayans, also known as Uruguayos, are known for their warm and welcoming nature. Family and community values play an important role in Uruguayan society, with strong emphasis placed on close-knit relationships and a sense of collectivism. The majority of the population is of European descent, primarily from Spain and Italy, which has influenced the country's language, culture, and traditions. In terms of religion, Uruguay is predominantly Roman Catholic (nominally), but there is also a large percentage of Spiritist, and a growing secular population.

Uruguayan society is highly literate, with a well-developed education system and a high literacy rate. The country has a strong tradition of promoting cultural and intellectual activities, with a rich heritage in literature, art, music, and dance. Football, or soccer, is a significant part of Uruguayan culture, with a passionate fan base and a long history of success in international competitions. Overall, Uruguay is a vibrant and diverse country that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality.

  • Least reached peoples are those who, because of geographical, religious, or social isolation, have not heard a credible presentation of the good news of Jesus.

We prioritize these peoples because God desires that all people have an opportunity to hear and respond to the Gospel. Evangelical missionaries have been actively serving in South America since the late Nineteenth Century. Since then, the Gospel has spread, disciples have been multiplied, churches have been established, and communities throughout South America have been transformed by the power of the Gospel. There are, however, many peoples and places throughout South America that remain mostly unreached by the Gospel.

One of these places is a region known as the Southern Cone. The Southern Cone is a geographic region in South America that encompasses Argentina, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil, whose people are primarily of European descent and who are considered to be mostly least-reached.
